Welcome!

I obtained my PhD in Text Mining at the Department of Informatics, Athens University of Economics and Business, under the supervision of Associate Professor Michalis Vazirgiannis, during May 2009. My PhD Thesis is titled: “Word Sense Disambiguation and Text Relatedness based on Word Thesauri”. Currently, I am a Post Doc at the Biotechnology Center of the Technical University of Dresden, working in Text Mining for the biomedical domain, co-operating with Prof. Dr. Michael Schroeder. Previously, I was a Post Doc Fellow, at the Department of Computer and Information Science, Database Systems Group, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, cooperating with Prof. Kjetil Nørvåg. I am also member of the DB-NET Team on Data and Web Mining since 2002.

Before my PhD at AUEB, I was at Imperial College where I obtained my MSc degree in Advanced Computing at the Department of Computing, and before that I was in AUEB again, where I obtained my BSc in Informatics from the respective department. In the publications area you can find my MSc Thesis:“ATLANTIS: A Layered Architecture for Web Content Post Retrieval Analysis”.

Research Interests
My research interests include word sense disambiguation, text retrieval, classification, and clustering, statistical natural language processing techniques, measures of lexical semantic relatedness and similarity, semantic smoothing kernels, supervised and unsupervised techniques for embedding knowledge resources in text applications, ontologies, construction and processing of semantic graphs, semantic information extraction from text, and digital libraries. I also have a strong interest in sentiment analysis and social graph mining. I am also interested in data mining applications and I am always in search of new application areas. If you have any interesting ideas feel free to contact me, or any member of DB-NET. In the download area you can find interesting resources, as well as software I have developed during my research. You may want to check out the Omiotis measure of semantic relatedness for pairs of senses, terms, and in general text segments. You may also want to read about the THESUS system, on which a part of Omiotis was based.

Collaborations
I have developed collaborations with the Department of Informatics and Telematics, Harokopio University of Athens (Dr. Iraklis Varlamis), the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications, of the Greek National Centre for Scientific Research "Demokritos" (Dr. George Paliouras), the Natural Language Processing Group of the Deparmtent of Informatics, at AUEB (Assistant Professor Ion Androutsopoulos), and the Department of Computer and Information Science, Database Systems Group, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (Prof. Kjetil Nørvåg). Finally, I am a member of the Hellenic Artificial Intelligence Society.

Visiting Researcher
I was a visiting researcher in March 2007, and March 2011, at the Department of Computer and Information Science in NTNU, located at Trondheim, Norway, thanks to Professor Kjetil Nørvåg.

Research Projects
I have participated in 8 research projects funded by the E.U.:
• 2001-2004 IST/FET - DB/GLOBE (IST-2001-32645)
• 2002-2004 IST/FET - PANDA - Patterns for Next-Generation Database Systems - FET Working Group (IST-2001-33058)

• 2008-2011 CASAM (FP7-217061).
• 2010-2013 PONTE (FP7-247945).
More information about several of these projects can be found here.

Teaching
In the past, I have offered more than 150 hours of Teaching Assistance (TA), as well as lecturing services, for the Department of Informatics, AUEB (October 2003 until January 2009), for the Department of Computer and Information Science, NTNU (May 2009 - March 2010), and the Department of Informatics, TUD (March 2010 - present). The courses in which I can offer services, among others, include data mining, text mining, databases, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, information retrieval, knowledge discovery and management, semantic search, and programming languages (C, C++, Java), both in the undergraduate (e.g., BSc) and the graduate levels (e.g., MSc).

Traveling
As most people do, I like traveling abroad. Every journey is a valuable experience. Please visit my photos area and have a look at some interesting places I have been to.
