About...Michalis Vazirgiannis
I was born in Athens, Greece. My educational background stands on a degree in Physics (1986), a MSc. in Robotics (1988), both from U. Athens, and a MSc. in Knowledge Based Systems from Heriot Watt University (in Edinburgh, UK). I acquired a Ph.D. degree in 1994 (Dept. of Informatics, U. Athens, Greece).
Since then, I have conducted research in the following places: the Knowledge & DB Lab (group, N.T.U. Athens), in GMD-IPSI (currently Frauhofer - IPSI), Germany, in Fern-Universitaet Hagen, in project VERSO(now GEMO) in INRIA/Paris, in IBM India Research Laboratory and in Max Planck Instistut fur Informatik (Saarbr cken, Germany). Currently I am supported by a Marie Curie Intra-European fellowship to work in area of "P2P Web Search", hosted by INRIA FUTURS (in GEMO group, headed by S. Abiteboul) in Orsay, Paris.
My previous research work ranges from Interactive Multimedia Systems, to Spatiotemporal databases and Data/Web/Text Mining algorithms.
My current research interests are on a. Web Graph analysis & evolution monitoring (sub-themes: page rank prediction, aggregate evolution metrics, model learning for web graph evolution) b. Distributed machine learning algorithms for P2P data & knowledge management (sub-themes: distributed dimensionality reduction, Sparse LSI, Kernel learning, P2P resource management) (Publications)
I am leading local research teams (in AUEB) in international research
projects
and have participated in
programme committees of international conferences in the areas: Data Bases,
Data Mining/Machine learning and the Web. I participate in the editorial board of the
Intelligent Data Analysis Journal (IOS press)
Since 2005 I hold an Associate Professor position in the area of "Databases & Information Systems" in the Dept of Informatics,
in Athens Univ. of Economics & Business (Greece).
Since 2008 I am teaching the data base course
in LIX
at Ecole Polytechnique,France
